MENTAL AND BEHAVIOURAL DISORDERS (F00-F99)

In 2012, Mental and behavioural disorders (F00-F99) were identified as the underlying cause of 8,120 registered deaths, representing 5.5% of all registered deaths.

Nearly two-thirds (64.0%) of deaths in 2012 due to mental and behavioural disorders occurred in females (5,198, compared to 2,922 in males). The median age at death was higher for females, at 89.2 years, compared with 85.7 years for males.

Dementia (F01, F03) accounted for 7,323 deaths in 2012, of which 2,488 were male and 4,835 were female. These deaths constitute 90.2% of mental and behavioural disorders in 2012, compared with 82.2% in 2003. The sex ratio of 51 males per 100 female deaths has increased from 49 males per 100 females in 2003. The median age at death for persons who died of dementia (88.5 years) was higher than the median age for mental and behavioural disorders (87.9 years) as a whole. See Explanatory Note 84 for further information.
